Congresswoman Ann Wagner, Vice Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has introduced a new piece of legislation aimed at safeguarding U.S. citizens from violence orchestrated by foreign entities. This initiative, known as the DETERRENCE Act, is supported by Congressman Nathaniel Moran, Congressman Brad Schneider, and Congressman Jared Moskowitz.

"In the wake of Iran’s attempted assassination of President Trump," Wagner stated, "it is critical we prevent future attacks on our nation and deter foreign influence operations within our borders." She emphasized that this bipartisan effort seeks to enhance penalties for those committing violent acts under foreign directives.

Jared Moskowitz highlighted his involvement in a task force investigating threats against Donald Trump and other Americans. He remarked on the need to "send a message that any person who works with a foreign government... will face severe consequences for harming Americans."

Nathaniel Moran also underscored the urgency due to recent threats from Iran against U.S. citizens. He described the legislation as "a testament to America’s unwavering commitment to protecting its people and leaders."

Brad Schneider expressed concern over Iran's actions targeting Americans with plots involving murder-for-hire. He stressed that Congress must act decisively to hold foreign adversaries accountable through increased penalties outlined in the DETERRENCE Act.

The proposed law aims to elevate criminal sentences for specific crimes conducted at the behest or coordination of foreign governments. The DETERRENCE Act complements similar Senate legislation introduced by Senators Joni Ernst and Maggie Hassan.
